Comprehensive studies have been performed to determine the various sources of hydrogen and nitrogen, and factors governing their dissolution in and removal from steel. As a result various practices have been developed to control the ingress of hydrogen and nitrogen into the steel at each processing stage. These practices include an on-line model which provides an advance warning to the caster operators when hydrogenitrogen-related caster breakout is imminent.
