A significant number of tuyere failures in the past on B-2 blast furnace at U. S. Steel Great Lakes Works inhibited a consistent, stable furnace operation. After modifications to the top equipment, tuyere design, tuyere water flow, and burden distribution techniques, tuyere life was significantly improved. Fuel injection rates and production levels were subsequently increased on the furnace. A detailed description of the operational changes will be reviewed and the benefits will be discussed in this paper.
