For the specimen of Akiyoshi marble, post-failure lateral displacement was measured by twelve radial displacement transducers mounted around the rock specimen in every 30-degree. Moreover, the lateral displacement and the failure condition was inspected by X-ray CT. The specimens used for this inspection were prepared by unloading at several interesting points appeared in a triaxial compression test. From this study, fol-lowings were concluded. First, the isotropic lateral displacement is caused by the development of small failures uniformly occurring in the specimen. Second, the anisotropic lateral displacement is caused by the development of localization of the small failure in the specimen, and the anisotropic displacement increases in the direction that the localization occurs. Third, the lateral displacement clearly increases with the increase in slide along a generated fracture if it has been generated. Thus, the progress of lateral displacement was successfully related to the failure of the specimen.
