Multimedia Capabilities of the Grand Alliance HDTV System

The Grand Alliance HDTV System has been designed to provide powerful capabilities that go well beyond the basic delivery of HDTV pictures and sound. Fundamentally, having video and audio information in digital form creates new opportunities for integrating video into computers, and vice versa. As shown in Figure 1, the Grand Alliance HDTV system has a layered digital architecture that incorporates header/descriptor elements and supports a high degree of the flexibility that they enable.
