The deterioration of water environment quality has been the present common question of many urban rivers in China To diagnoses the question, the assessment of water environment quality of urban river (AWEQUR) will provide essential information for urban river restoration. To fit for the objective of river restoration, starting with the idea of environment, the concept of water environment of urban river and its connotation are considered as 5 essential aspects including morphology, hydrodynamics, water quality, zoology and landscape in this paper, and the 5 essential factors relate tightly each other, especially the former 2 factors are basic among them and influence the later. Then revolving these 5 aspects, the index system and corresponding model for AWEQUR are established. As the instance, 6 representative sections are chosen on the span 16.38km of Ancient Canal in Zhenjiang city. Furthermore, to reveal and compare the water environment quality(WEQ) of reach between having been harnesseded and not, the above theory and method are applied to the case study of the Ancient Canal in Zhenjiang city. The results indicate that WEQ of every section are not good in general, and WEQ of sections having been harnessed are not better. As the further results, except landscape, qualities of other 4 factors have not been improved in the reach having been harnessed . Obviously the harnss on Ancient Canal has not attained the ideal effect in earlier period. Finally, according to the results and relation between each factor, suggestions for next renovation on Ancient Canal are put forward.
