Practices that reduce fertilizer inputs without sacrificing turfgrass quality are needed,but current soil tests do not provide a reliable measure of Nitrogen (N) fertility within the turf profile.The Illinois soil N test has been developed to predict crop response to applied N by measuring the amount of soil amino sugar N in the soil.Soil amino sugar N does not fluctuate as rapidly as other forms of N in soil.The objective of this study was to determine the spatial variation of soil amino sugar N in soil in order to determine the number of samples required within a particular area for use of the Illinois soil N test as a management tool on golf course fairways.Soil samples to a depth of 15 cm were collected from two fairways on each of two golf courses in Ohio,USA and analyzed for soil amino sugar N concentration.The data indicated that soil amino sugar N concentrations measured on the four sampled fairways varied,but the spatial correlation present would allow for traditional soil sampling techniques to be used to assess the soil amino sugar N concentration within an area such as a golf course fairway.
