The fundamental and applied investigations at Southern Research Institute, conducted under bench-, pilot-and full-scale conditions, are elucidating the fundamental mechanisms associated with mercury oxidation and capture in coal-fired boilers. Furthermore, a kinetic model of mercury oxidation and removal, catalyzed by unburned carbon (UBC) in coal-fired boilers, has been developed and used to predict mercury oxidation and removal. In addition, the synergistic enhancement of mercury capture by carbon and calcium in the flyash has been mechanistically elucidated and quantitatively described for various coal-fired configurations, such as coal blending and sorbent injection.
