Approximately 25 million tons of useable coal fines are impounded or landfilled every year in the U.S. because these fines are expensive to clean and difficult to handle. The U.S. Department of Energy has developed a technology called GranuFlow™ that agglomerates coal fines. The coal agglomerates are much easier to clean and handle than untreated coal. As part of a project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the State of Pennsylvania, and various industry partners, GranuFlow is being demonstrated at two coal cleaning plants. This paper presents an economic and an engineering analysis of the first of these demonstrations.
