Effects of Coupling Agent on Bamboo Surface Energy and Bonding Strength

Introduction Bamboo has its special structure properties different from woods, it is difficult to bonding bamboo. Using coupling agents to improve the bonding strength of composites materials were reported. In this paper three kinds of silicon coupling agent and one coupling agent made by ourself were applied to the bamboo surface. Influence of coupling agent treatment of bamboo surface on bamboo board adhesion performance were investigated. The result show that the surface free energy of bamboo board were increased which treated by coupling agent CA5, KH560 and KH602. The surface wettability was improved as well. However, the result is opposite which treated by coupling agent KH550. While all of the bonding strength which surface of bamboo pretreated by 4 kinds of coupling agent was increased.
