Solidification of Oilfield Sludge: An Experimental Study at Zhongyuan, China

This study determined chemical compositions and physical and chemical properties of the sludge in the Zhongyuan oilfield, using both chemistry and instrument methods. The sludge contains (1) CaCO_3 and MgCO_3 being the main compositions, (2) high content of freely soluble salts and (3) much water and base oil. Cement solidification is a harmless, economical and effective waste treatment method. Therefore, cement solidification for treating the sludge was selected, plus second, third and multi factorial experiments of secondary additives were carried out to achieve the perfect additives proportions for cement solidification. According to GB5086-85, the performance testing of solidification product was executed. Results show that solidification product meet the environment protection criteria, making the sludge harmless.
