A trans-provincial water allocation program in the Heihe river basin has been started since 2000 and an emergent 3 year water saving project were also carried out during 2001 to 2003 in order to prevent the downstream Ejina oasis from further withering. Water volume into the oasis has increased after a consecutive 5 year water diversion, and the east Juyan lake which had dried up for years is now filled with water again. In this paper, effects of these measures will be assessed based on land cover changes derived through multi-temporal satellite images.
