The formation of self-assembled CdTe quantum dot rings grown on (100) ZnTe by molecular beam epitaxy is reported. The ring structures consist of interconnected dots in nearly perfect circles, forming man-made benzene-like quantum dot molecules. In addition, surface chemical imaging of the structures indicates that the topmost surface of the ring structures is Te-rich and resistant to oxidation and carbon contamination. This represents a self-passivation effect during the process of self-assembly, which is needed for many practical applications involving quantum dots.
