Devices based on ceramic, ion transport membranes are being used or have potential in numerous technologically important applications such as chemical separation of gases for primary materials manufacture, power generation via fuel cells, and oxygen enrichment systems. Ceramic membranes in these devices are selected primarily for ionic or electronic properties and yet they often must perform under harsh conditions of temperature and chemical potential gradients. Successful commercialization of devices based on the use of these membranes will require manufacturing of robust membranes. This paper will discuss methods to assess the strength and reliability of ceramic, ion transport membrane materials.
