By using various types of smell detectors and distinction system, we detected the mine fires and spontaneous combustion of coal earlier than using conventional sensors, which are CO and smoke sensors. We have carried out a series of experiments with these smell detectors in the laboratory and at the practical coal mines. From the results of laboratory tests and measurements at underground coal mines, it is clear that as follows; 1) the smell detector can detect the spontaneous combustion of coal earlier than conventional sensors. 2) A smell distinction system for underground mine fire which uses a neural-network system can discriminate which materials are heated. 3) The smell detector for centralized monitoring system can discern the change of smell which is generated by different material. 4) The portable smell detector is useful for measuring the smell in underground mines and can give us a lot of information of danger place or zone of spontaneous combustion of coal. In this paper, the outline of these developed devices and the results of tests and measurements are described.
