TANKS AND PIPELINES - ANALYSIS OF SOME CASES OF FAILURE

High stresses originate in regions of support of circular cylindrical storage tanks and vessels in petrochemical industry. This paper discusses effects of foundation settlement and some random cracks due to defective welds. The shakedown effect is studied in the case when the bottom plate lifts off its foundation. Theoretical solution of compressive membrane stress due to saddle load and its evaluation with respect to buckling is included. Plastic punching of the saddle or lug into the cylindrical shell of tube line occurs. Results of experiment are discussed.
