Plant owners face significant challenges to improve profitability in a competitive business climate which is characterised by tight margins and aging equipment. Unplanned equipment outages due to poor equipment reliability lead to high maintenance costs in plants, and erosion of profit margins. This paper describes approaches to maximise equipment reliability using integrated reliability management systems which support business goals. These approaches utilise multidimensional work processes and engage personnel in operations, inspection and maintenance to develop programs for improving equipment reliability. When fully implemented in a plant, equipment maintenance is optimised and unplanned outages are reduced, thereby increasing the mechanical availability of facilities.
