It is more than twenty years ago that I first pointed out a possibility of confinement of colored particles via the BRS quartet mechanism. This work was immediately generalized to a simpler confinement condition 1 + u = 0 in a succeeding work in collaboration with I. Ojima, which was unfortunately rejected from Nuclear Physics but the content was essentially reproduced in our report article published in 1979. Since then, unfortunately, I have made no essential progress in the field, aside from the work with H. Hata in which we have shown that the condition 1 + u = 0 is actually realized in a toy model of 4d Yang-Mills theory which we comment on later in this talk. Our condition 1 + u = 0 is merely a sufficient condition for the color confinement to occur. The color confinement does not necessarily imply the condition 1 + u = 0, although I strongly suspect it does. Despite such a situation for a long time, Nakajima and Furui have recently performed non-perturbative calculations on the lattice in this direction and obtained a very interesting result that u seems to approach the desired value ―1 numerically. This is remarkable and has revived the interest in our old proposal of color confinement via the BRS quartet mechanism. It is the purpose of this talk to review our confinement condition and the quartet mechanism.
