This paper represents an effort to identify suitable gun-projectile combination to determine ballistic limit of rolled homogenous armour for the purpose of acceptance of production line armor plates. In this study, rolled homogenous armour of 50 mm thick was selected for determination of ballistic limit using established armor proofing 57 mm AP projectile. The penetration mode of the projectiles against the armor was examined. Applying kinetic energy relationship and the impact energy of the projectile for a plugging/shear mode of failure, the shear stress on the armor has been estimated. The ballistic limit (BL) of a 30mm Armor Piercing (AP) projectile at appropriate obliquity has been theoretically predicted. The experimentally determined BL of the armor using 30mm AP projectile fairly agrees with the predicted one. The findings of this study provide a simpler approach for cross matching of AP projectiles vis-a-vis the use of new type of AP shots in lieu of established ones for the purpose of acceptance test of production line armour having similar composition and physical properties.
