Dynamic compaction is considered as one of the most successful methods for making bulk materials of difficult-to-consolidate powders. The authors have developed a new method, which employs underwater shock waves generated by the detonation of an explosive. The advantages of underwater shock wave in dynamic consolidation are discussed in details. The control of the pressure pulse is made by the manipulations of the configurations of the set up or the height of water column or both. This process is simple and very effective. A very high converging pressure is available from a set up of decreasing cross section of water column and the use of such assembly is found to be very attractive in the consolidation of superhard material powders. Further, a straight water column, of different heights, is applicable for the shock consolidation of relatively soft material powders where high pressure consolidation conditions are not essential. Since the pressure required for compaction is decreased by heating the powders, the results of the attempts of hot dynamic compaction are also presented.
