Gamma radiation from a ~(60)Co source was used to induce parathion degradation in aqueous solution, and the resulting products were quantified by gas chromatography-nitrogen phosphorus detector and identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The insecticide was completely degraded in aqueous solution after treatment with a 1.0 kGy dose at a dose rate of 3.12 kGy/h. The metabolites detected after radiolysis were p-nitrophenol, p-aminophenol, paraoxon and aminoparathion, which are the same as those formed by biological degradation. The results showed that the total radiation and the dose rate applied to the aqueous solution had a significant effect on insecticide degradation, and that the formation of metabolites occurred in a selective way, depending on the dose and dose rate applied. The parathion radiation yield (G-parathion) and the gamma radiation dose needed to achieve a 50% reduction in the initial insecticide concentration in aqueous solution were also calculated.
