At the 4th symposium in 1996 in Kaiserslautern, a report was presented about the development of new surface protection systems for the permanent protection of natural draught cooling towers. In the context of the VGB Regulation that appeared in 1999 relating to the protection of cooling towers, this contribution reports on experience with these material systems and discusses the framework conditions for the application. Proven products for which references can be given have been available for years for a wide range of requirements. But new material systems enable improved surface protection for reinforced concrete in terms of both technical usability and durability, depending on the specific stresses of the respective sub-areas of the cooler structure. Using practical examples, the advantages and disadvantages of certain material groups will be discussed, taking into account both the continuous stress endured in operation as well as the requirements for the application.
