@@A “modified local soil induced ecological restoration” (MLS-IER) technology was developed for algal bloom prevention and restoration of submerged vegetation in degraded shallow lakes. This technology is to use local soil particles (the soil near a lake) that are modified by a small amount of biodegradable natural polymers to flocculate algal biomass and the nutrients in the cells into the sediment (Pan et al. 2006a; 2006b; Zou et al. 2006). The technology can quickly change the anoxic water-sediment surface by applying a second layer of MLS, which can prevent re-suspension, to cover/seal the algal flocs into the sediment and keep the upper layer sediment aerobic (Pan et al. 2011a, b).
