Knowledge-based Systems and Knowledge Management

Enterprises are rather complex systems which have to be managed for their internal affairs, but more importantly for the many relations to the different environment in which they are operating and embedding, and this environment are changing much more rapidly and the need for relevant information and knowledge become of paramount in the decision making processes at all level of enterprise management As we enter the new millennium, our approach to product development is evolving rapidly. Companies are in the process of creating a distributed design and manufacturing environment that enables integrated product, processes, and the knowledge create, share, re-use, reserve. Certain strategies and specific technologies are required to create such an environment. The core activity of manufacturing no longer confining to making things but lies in the systematic processing of knowledge to create value for customers. Building and maintaining the enterprise knowledge base and enabling its efficient use for decision support are major tasks of enterprise engineering. Knowledge-based systems are outcome of knowledge engineering process that may be seen as providing some of the building blocks knowledge management, a way of formalizing and automating knowledge. The key issue addressed in this article is: the scope of enterprises engineering, the knowledge-based system and enterprise competitiveness, knowledge, knowledge management and their continuous evolution and challenge the firm must overcome. Also the current problems in the field are identified and initiatives are presented.
