Toward Establishing Knowledge Science and Technology

摘要

This paper first introduces School of Knowledge Science that was established in 1998 in Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, which is the first school established in the world that claims knowledge as a target of science. We have to mention here what we are seeking by the name of knowledge science. The first dean of this school was Professor Ikujiro Nonaka who is now worldwide famous in the field of knowledge management. But, since knowledge will certainly become a key concept in every field in the 21st century, the school has enlisted researchers from different fields to develop knowledge science that has a trans-disciplinary property in nature. The paper introduces this ambitious program for establishing knowledge science,, including achievements until now, present conditions, difficulties and future problems. Discussions will be extended to the possibility of trans-disciplinary knowledge exchange utilizing information and communication technologies.
