The Iron and Steelmaking Industry has historically been a high energy-consuming and environmentally-impacting business. The state-of-the-art technology in this industry is ever-improving, but opportunities remain for greater progress. Many of the realized and still 'yet-to-be-adopted' improvements are tied to ongoing developments and implementation of technologies that employ industrial gases. Industrial gases have an important role in reducing energy requirements, minimizing environmental impact, and improving the overall economics of iron and Steelmaking. This paper summarizes the opportunities as they are seen from the perspective of an industrial gas supplier -- with special emphasis on how industrial gas-based technologies overcome environmental problems.
