The present study has clearly revealed that the location of most of the transmission towers had been arbitrarily selected without giving due consideration to topographical conditions for the foundation. At some locations no adequate slopes and drains have been provided to drain off the rainwater quickly from the tower foundation. At various towers puddle marks under the transmission tower legs were clearly visible indicating the accumulation of water during monsoon. Out of 126 tower locations surveyed in Baira Siul - Pong transmission line, 25 tower sites have been found to be located on unsafe zones - three towers located near the reservoir were found to be highly unstable, where as 22 other towers were categorized as unstable. Among these the slopes around 10 towers need immediate suitable control measures to strengthen the stability of the towers. The most vulnerable zone had been found near the reservoir where tower nos. 52, 53 and 56 were located. In fact, these towers needed realignment in view of the safety and commercial viability of the strategically located transmission line.
