After extraction of holmium metallofullerene sublimate with CS_2 and a 3-step HPLC separation, Ho_2@C_(82) was isolated and characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometry and MALDI-TOF MS. Greater loading of the carbon rods with Ho_2O_3 led to a higher relative yield of dimetallofullerenes. About 90% of all of the holmium metallofullerenes (Ho@C_(60), Ho@C_(70) and Ho@C_(74)) are insoluble in the solvents commonly used for fullerene extraction (CS_2, toluene, etc) and remain in the solid phase. However, Ho@C_(60), Ho@C_(70) and Ho@C_(74) are slightly soluble in several amines, and once dissolved, the holmium metallofullerenes can then undergo a Bingel reaction to produce highly-soluble derivatives such as Ho@C_(2n)[C(COOEt_2)_2]_n.
