A series of the triaxial compression tests on specimens of artificial methane hydrate and ice were carried out, and the effect of various test conditions such as the temperature, confining pressure, strain rate and density on the compressive strength of the specimens was investigated. The results suggest that the com-pressive strength of both methane hydrate and the ice at low density was dependent on all test conditions investigated, although that of ice at high density was independent of confining pressure. The applicability of ice as an analog for methane hydrate was discussed through the comparison of both test results. In relation to compressive strength, ice at low density can be substituted for methane hydrate.
