The mass of gases produced and handled in the pyrometallurgical plants is in many cases similar to the mass of solids processed by these plants. Gases should therefore be accounted for in any material balance calculations related to such process. While solids are characterized by their flow and composition, gases are characterized by their pressure, temperature and sometimes flow rate. Although various material balancing softwares are available to process data related to solids and liquids, few, if any, are available to process data from gases/solids reactors. This paper describes the basis of an algorithm to process such type of data. Data collected from the cooling zone of an iron ore induration furnace is used to illustrate the application of the algorithm.
