A base line and progressive inspection philosophy is essential for the effective characterisation of the long term creep behaviour of different High Temperature and Pressure (HTP) component populations. This is of particular importance if the life of power plant is extended beyond the design life. The base line inspections lead to progressive inspections with a feedback loop to modify actions and are usually supported by a probabilistic risk analysis. Case studies that demonstrate this view are discussed and are sourced from: headers and pipework fabricated from CrMo and CrMoV low alloy steels and 12CrMoV high chromium steels.
