The removal of grinding chip is a very complex process. During elastic and plastic deformation, heat generation and propagation always been the major factors of chip formation mechanism. Research in grinding volume revel some information of grindign process and characteristics. By means of observation, research and analysis of SEM photomicrographics of grinding chips, an empirical model relating the average volume of chips to wheel speed and table speed was obtained using rigorous statistical analysis and curve fitting methods. An equivalent chip volume parameter is proposed to define the comparable chip size of various grinding conditions, where the chip volume has firm relationship with wheel speed and table speed, the size and shape of chips are somewhat related to surface finish and grinding energy. Therefore, investigating the chip volume leads to more understand the natural and course of metal removal which lead to a rational application and control of the grinding process.
