In this study, we conduct wind tunnel tests and numerical investigation of aerodynamic forces of shallow box girders with intermittent guard walls. In order to simulate the flow around the box girder, three dimensional numerical simulations are carried out by using finite volume method. The model has dimensions of B = 16m, D = 2.4 m (B/D = 6.67, B: width, D: depth) with guard walls of 1.2m height. For wind tunnel tests, the models with 1/48 scales are used for direct measurements of aerodynamic forces and observations of aeroelastic responses. As the results, the intermittent guardwalls of 6.5 m width at intervals of 13 m cause drastic change of the flow patterns on the bridge deck and make shallow box girder more stable.
