The impact of changing a number of key variables on both capital and life-cycle costs have been compared making a number of simplifying assumptions for a permeable reactive barrier treating groundwater at a prototypical (template) site. While not included, less stringent cleanup goals could reduce costs by shortening the remediation times as well as allowing for smaller remediation systems. Of the factors that could be relatively easily controlled, reducing the monitoring effort can have the greatest impact on life-cycle costs. Using two barriers instead of one can result in similar life-cycle costs while achieving closure in half the time provided the initial estimate of remediation time does not exceed 30 years. Subsequent efforts for this project will involve similar evaluations of other technologies and provide comparisons with respect to how different conditions might favor costs of one technology over another.
