Injection Testing: The Missing Link for Design of In Situ Groundwater Remediation

In situ remediation is a "contact sport." Without physical contact to the localized sites where the contamination is sorbed, the plethora of remediation techniques we have at our disposal will not work. A key element to in situ groundwater remediation technology is to successfully deliver a treatment reagent to a target zone. An injection test can and should be conducted to provide a higher level of delivery success, obtain injection design parameters, and to evaluate the delivery feasibility. The injection-test solution should include a visual tracer (such as a flourescein dye) and a chemical marker (such as bromide). As the test solution is being injected, frequent samples should be collected at monitoring wells to observe and record when the solution reaches these wells. At the same time, samples can be collected for bromide analysis and to confirm the visual tracer. A reagent (e.g., lactate, molasses, etc.) can also be added to the test solution and was used at this site. This provided a third confirmation of influence by testing for total organic carbon. The bottom line is the target zone will go untreated if a reagent cannot be delivered to it. An injection test can help confirm that contact can be achieved within the target zone.
