We have been working in the field of wood extrusion for more than 10 years. We still use starch in our formulations; tit can be maize, rice, tapioca or corn. Starch is a thermoplastic material and therefore there is less resin needed in the final product, wood plastics composites. Starch also absorbs thewater, so that we can use wood with a higher water content. The influence of the fiber quality is very important in wood extrusion. We already know the effect of fiber size, humidity and the kind of wood on processing and properties. Different grades of material and different resin bases (PP, PVC, etc) need different additives. The presentation will include an overview of which additives are necessary for processing, and their influence in properties. The price of compounds, One-Pack and additives for wood-plastic composites will be discussed, in relation toprocessing and the advantages or cost-effectiveness of additives. There is also a difference in processing and properties between profiles produced with compound and those made by Direct Extrusion with One-pack. These differences will be discussed and at the end there will be a short review of outdoor applications in wood plastic composites.
