Changes in soil microbial community diversity were assessed in the rhizosphere of rice (Oryza sativa L.) stressed by bound residues of metsulfuron-methyl (BR) in soil, using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplicons of 16S rDNA sequence of bacteria in soil, and a specially designed rhizobox where rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings were grown for 35 days in a soil spiked with BR at levels of 0 and 0.05 mg BR kg~(-1) soil. The soil in the rhizobox was divided into eight separate compartments at various distances from the root surface. The number of bands on the PCR-DGGE profile for the 0-2 mm zone in the rhizosphere of rice (Oryza sativa L.) decreased and the structure of the microorganism community in the soil changed under the stress of BR. The results suggest that the effects of BR in soil on the diversity of microorganisms could be induced by the root proximity of rice (Oryza sativa L.).
