End users of solar home systems do not want electricity, but the services generated with the help of electricity such as illumination. Therefore, when calculating the cost of a solar home system in providing lighting, the target should be to minimize the cost of illumination. To calculate the cost for the illumination it is necessary to analyse the various cost sources and factors including the cost of electricity, lamp cost, depreciation rate of the lamp, type of application ad location. This paper provides an aggregate and systematic approach to calculating and comparing the cost of illumination.
