Common objectives of reforestation of cutover peatlands are diminution of nutrition loads and production of energy wood. We studied the effect of fertilization and reforestation methods on the early establishment of pubescent birch seedlings on a cutover peatland. Six treatments of ash, biotite, or PK-fertilizer were replicated in three blocks in different mixtures corresponding to 50 kg/ha of phosphate. Birch seeds were sown in randomized halves of split plots, while other halves were naturally reforested. The largest quantities and dominant heights of birch seedlings appeared on the ash-fertilized plots. Sowing was not superior to natural regeneration on these sites at short distances from birch stands.
