GROUNDWATER QUALITY IN PEATLANDS IN RELATION TO THAT IN SURROUNDING AREAS

The relations of peatland groundwater quality to the chemical quality of the groundwater in the surrounding forested upland soils and to the stream water quality were studied. Also the relation of water quality in groundwater wells to the nutrient concentrations of the soils around them was studied. On peatlands groundwater was collected both from the peat and from mineral soil under the peat. The groundwater in peat was found not to correlate with concentrations of available nutrient in upland soils or nutrients in peat. The concentrations of Ca, Mg and K in groundwater were positively correlated between uplands and peatlands but the correlation continued to the stream water only by Ca. From the results it was not possible to determine in what extent the water under the peat was affected by water in peat above it and by water from surrounding upland areas. From organic carbon in water it can be concluded that water is mainly flowing through peat to the streams.
