We critically review the published evidence for the presence of a unique 5-keto sugar in the leaves of Sphagnum moss. Ambiguities in the evidence and unanswered questions are highlighted. Presently there is no direct proof for the existence of a 5-keto sugar in Sphagnum. This aim of this review is to establish a basis for further research into this matter.
