摘要

Peatlands play the leading role in the land use structure of the number of countries. For many human activities (e.g. tropical forestry, mountain stock raising, oil and gas producing in Canada and West Siberia, etc.) there is no alternate lands for use. Meanwhile the peatlands natural functions (water regime regulation, carbon accumulation, water pollution control, climate change mitigation, biodiversity maintenance etc.) provided primarily by not disturbed ecosystems are in rising demand in socio-economic context nowadays. The world protected area system has no capacity to provide conserving enough area of peatlands. The wise spatial land use planning introduced both by Ramsar Convention and Convention on Biodiversity could help to solve this contradiction in future.
