From 1997 through 1999, Applied Process Technology, Inc. (APT) andrnthe Los Angeles Department of Water & Power (LADWP) conducted arnthree-phase project to demonstrate and evaluate the performance ofrnAPT's line-pressure advanced oxidation process, called HiPOx, forrnremoving perchloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE) fromrncontaminated groundwater without forming bromate in the presence ofrnbromide. The project was conducted on wells drawn from thernHeadworks Well Field located within the San Fernando GroundwaterrnBasin. The influent PCE and TCE concentrations each ranged fromrn160 to 220 ppb (μg/L). The influent bromide concentration rangedrnfrom 150 to 200 ppb. The performance objective for the HiPOx systemrnwas to reduce PCE and TCE to less than 80% of California's 3 ppbrnMCL while holding the effluent bromate concentration to less than 8rnppb, or 80% of the National Primary Drinking Water Regulation. ThernHiPOx system met all performance objectives of this evaluation. Sincernthen, APT has conducted several pilot studies in which HiPOx hasrndestroyed contaminants while controlling the formation of bromate tornbelow MCLs.
