This paper describes a haptic device for fabric tactile simulation. We established representative surface and frictional profiles for a set of woven and non-woven fabrics. We also developed a feedback system for simulating the fabric topology and frictional properties which are required to give a feel of fabric touch. The Kawabata KES-F system has been used to quantify these profiles. Subjective evaluation has been done to test the performance of the device using woven fabrics. Fifteen subjects compared the feel of five real fabrics with the feel of corresponding virtual fabrics. They were able to perceive different levels of roughness as well as different topologies of virtual fabrics using the device. Seventy five percent of the tests show good correlation of real and virtual samples for roughness and friction.
