An Economic and Reliable Propulsion System Choice for a Handysize Bulk Carrier

This presented paper gives a detailed study on propulsion choice for a second series of 17 000 DWT bulk carriers ordered by a Polish shipowner at Szczecin Shipyard in Poland. The first series already built and in operation has got a slow speed engine, for the second series the owner asked to analyse a medium speed version alternative, guided by a lower price offered by a medium speed engine maker. A study based on concrete data reveals that this is not an economically attractive proposal also reliability-wise it is more vulnerable to damage.
