Biological thresholds are used to establish maximum permissible exposure (MPE) limits for lasers. This research has involved a variety of wavelengths and exposure durations from sub-nanosecond pulsed exposures to exposures lasting several hours. Although not every conceivable exposure condition can be validated by experiment, basic rules and overall trends have been established to provide MPE values for a wide variety of exposure conditions. The Total on Time Pulse Method, with modification, provides a means for evaluating lasers that emit pulses of varying energy.
