An investigation of the corrosion behaviour of Ni-Co alloy plated steel, in which the plating was modified by organic compounds used as brighteners in the electrodeposition process, in artificial tropical sea water (based on Dr Biener's 'Tropic Marin' product, containing 70 elements of the Periodic System) was made. The steel anodic dissolution technique was used to find the hydrogen absorbed by the Ni-Co alloy plating and the subsurface layer of the steel at various depths from the metal/corrosion medium, interface. It was found that molecules of organic compounds were incorporated into the Ni-Co alloy and acted as corrosion and hydrogen absorption inhibitors. The N- and S-containing compounds used acted on the bacterial metabolic process and decreased the H_2S content in corrosion medium. The inhibitive action of organic compounds is related to their molecular structure.
