The liquid crystal data projector (PJ) technology has progressed rapidly since the portable type was introduced in the market in 1995. Figure 1 shows the changes in the brightness of the liquid crystal PJ. From the products with about 200 lm in 1995, ones that exceed 3000 lm are produced in 2000. This means the brightness improvement of approximately 15-fold in 5 years. Meanwhile, the resolution has also been improved from VGA at the beginning to SXGA that are currently on the market. In addition, the PJ is becoming smaller and lighter with the miniaturization of the panel, and PJ of 2 kg is already on the market. This is mainly due to the technological evolution of the panel that improves the pixel density by about 9 times. In the mean time, the market size of the data PJ became 1.2 ~ 1.3 million units in 2000, which is approximately 40% annual market growth. It is thought that the realization of high brightness, small size, and lightweight of the data PJ plays a big role in the rapid growth of the market.
