To support system maintenance, most deployed systems require some level of fault detection and fault isolation (FD/FI), often expressed as a percentage of faults detected, with a given rate or confidence-level of fault isolation to a single, replaceable unit. In contrast to the usual method of allocating the identical FD or FI requirements to every replaceable unit, we propose a revised allocation method that optimizes system effectiveness (satisfying requirements for minimum cost). The resulting allocation both satisfies the system FD/FI requirements and provides an optimum solution over all elements of the system by considering the effect of varying failure rates for individual replaceable units.
