We present a method of computer system performance analysis. As an example of the method's utility, we apply it to the process of designing and modeling a database management system to aid physicals and asaff in the process of monitoring and analyzing patient cardiovascular and respoiratory data in a typical hospial intensive care unit (ICU). This example application is based on wnrok in critical care data analysis performed by the first author as part of the Ph.D. dissertation requirement at the University of Pennsylvania. The critical data needs of ICU staff are analyzed and a client-server based database processing system is presented which is robust enough to sustain the data reocrding needs of 20 patients within the ICU with sufficient bandwith to permit concurent data retrieval on patients.
