The mining industry is subject to change through both periodic cycles and longer term, secular trends. The cycles are characterised by a periodicity ranging in years and each one is somewhat unique in terms of what causes the initiation of an upward or downward direction. The secular trends occur over a period of decades. They are sometimes cyclical but can also reflect more permanent, evolutionary changes in the industry.
